Summer = Time Spent Outside.  Active and unstructured outdoor play allows kids time to innovate, think, reflect, and be alone with their thoughts.  Getting kids to play outside can be easier said than done, but it’s more important than ever.

Nature play (or time spent outside) has tons of benefits:

  • Gets kids moving
  • Promotes creativity
  • Increases confidence,
  • Gives them time to think

The reality is not every house has a yard or outdoor space.  If space is limited; work with what you have, which might mean clearing off patio space or cleaning cobwebs from under steps.  If you don’t have a yard or patio to work with, maybe there’s a great climbing tree instead.  Preparing space for imaginative play provides opportunities for exploration.

The Olympics allows us to cheer on athletes from our country as they work to bring home medals.  It’s also a great way to introduce kids to sports they may not be exposed to otherwise.  With the Games ending on Sunday (8/8), we wanted to share fun ways you can bring the Olympic Games to your backyard!

“They don’t take a lot of prep work or props; just some outdoor space (though some can work indoors), a few items, and everyone will be able to show off their abilities and strengths…”  Don’t forget to include a medal ceremony to ensure your Backyard Olympics have the same rewarding spirit
